FSSL YOUNG ARTIST COMPETITION 2026

Application

The application deadline for the 2026 competitions has passed.

Procedures and Guidelines

Preliminary Application Deadline ~ Received by Midnight on Sunday, February 8, 2026

• All applicants must live within a 500-mile radius of St. Louis and be members of the Flute Society of Saint Louis.
• All applicants must currently be enrolled at a secondary public, private, or home school, or be enrolled at a university
• Previous 1st prize FSSL Young Artist winners may not compete for same competition again.
• Preliminary Round: Audio recordings must be received by midnight (CST) on February 8 @ slmonier@yahoo.com

Do not talk on the audio recording Mp3 formatting — NO EDITING

• All preliminary round submissions must be recorded without piano accompaniment if piece has piano.
• A pianist will be provided for all finalists.
• Finalists will be notified by February 15, 2026.

Final Round: Finalists will perform in-person on Saturday, March 28, 2026 in a concert at FLUTE DAY.

HIGH SCHOOL DIVISION

For the High School preliminary round, all applicants must submit a completed application, FSSL dues and application fee, and an unedited audio recording of the required etude listed below (based on the state in which they live in). The fees, application, and required etude (mp3 format) must be submitted to slmonier@yahoo by midnight on Sunday, February 8, 2026. The judges will select finalists to move on to the final round, which will take place in person during Flute Day on Saturday, March 28, 2026. The finalists will perform both selections from the final round list below. A pianist will be provided for each finalist.

Preliminary Round (Submit etude based on the state you currently reside in)

Final Round

YOUNG ARTIST DIVISION

For the Young Artist Division preliminary round, the applicant must be between the ages 18-27.  All applicants must submit a completed application, FSSL dues and application fee, and an unedited audio recording of the required repertoire listed below. The fees, application, and unedited recording (mp3 format) must be submitted by midnight on Sunday, February 8, 2026 and emailed to slmonier@yahoo.com. The judges will select finalists to move on to the final round, which will take place in person during Flute Day on Saturday, March 28, 2026. The finalists will perform the required selections from the list below. A pianist will be provided for each finalist.

Preliminary Round (Both selections required)

  • Donjon: Eight Etudes de Salon, etude #1 “Elegie”
  • Choice of a solo flute piece that does not exceed 10 minutes in length (solo flute means without written piano accompaniment)
    • Applicants will be disqualified if the submission includes a work that is written for flute and any other instrument. Unaccompanied works only.

Final Round (Copland is required, then choice between Loggins-Hull and Dorff)

  • Copland: Duo for flute and piano, mvmt. I
  • Choice between: Allison Loggins-Hull Homeland for solo flute or Daniel Dorff Tweet for solo piccolo
